NewYorkUpstate.com released a report on Thursday of the 40 places in upstate New York with the “highest rates of unmarried eligible adults using the most current data from the U.S. Census.”
To determine their rankings, data was collected from the 2017 Census five-year population estimates. Several of the top spots were occupied by areas that are home to colleges and universities that may have an abundance of fresh graduates.
The report only includes restaurants from upstate - which is considered north of Westchester and Rockland counties - in the rankings.
Local towns, villages and cities to make the cut, according to the report, include:
Arlington (eighth overall):
- Eligible population: 3,208;
- Percent unmarried: 81.8 percent;
- Percent never married: 64 percent;
- Males: 1,488;
- Percent unmarried: 81.4 percent;
- Percent never married: 62 percent;
- Females: 1,720;
- Percent unmarried: 80.9 percent;
- Percent never married: 65.7 percent.
Newburgh (29th):
- Eligible population: 20,398;
- Percent unmarried: 68.1 percent;
- Percent never married: 50.1 percent;
- Males: 9,654
- Percent unmarried: 65.8 percent;
- Percent never married: 51.6 percent;
- Females: 10,744;
- Percent unmarried: 70.1 percent;
- Percent never married: 48.8 percent.
Poughkeepsie (35th):
- Eligible population: 25,370;
- Percent unmarried: 67.5 percent;
- Percent never married: 47.6 percent;
- Males: 12,362;
- Percent unmarried: 65.8 percent;
- Percent never married: 51.3 percent;
- Females: 13,008;
- Percent unmarried: 69.2 percent;
- Percent never married: 44.1 percent.
